The Corpse of an Astronaut

What would happen if an astronaut died in space? What would happen to the body? First, it would float through the gravitational void of space, and eventually it would get pulled in by the gravitational force of a celestial body, most likely a star.  But what if it landed on a habitable planet? Would it bring life to the new planet? According to Gary King, “a microbial biologist at Louisiana State University who studies microbes that survive in extreme environments,” it’s possible. There are already so many microbes that can survive extreme conditions and long periods of time in stasis...

The Science of Zombieism

As a bit of a joke, one day a couple of scientists (Stephen Kane, an exoplanet scientist at San Francisco State University and Franck Selsis, of the Laboratoire d’Astrophysique de Bordeaux in France) grabbed a drink and discussed the science of zombieism, more specifically, how to determine whether or not a planet has been affected by a zombie apocalypse. Basically, it all comes down to gas. When a human body dies, it emits hydrogen sulfide gas. In the event of a zombie apocalypse, where billions of bodies are dead (yet reanimated), the amount of hydrogen sulfide would be so massive, that it would be visible from space (with the help of 10 James Webb Telescopes, of course). According to the Drake Equation, the probability is very high that extraterrestrial life exists in the universe, but there simply is no evidence to prove it (this kunundrum is called the Fermi paradox). Maybe zombieism is the reason why we’ve never made contact with another intelligent civilization? It’s definitely a possibility...
